Tajikistan vs Mongolia Preview:

The match, which is also part of the qualification process for the AFC Asian Cup China 2023, sees the resumption of Group F after a 16-month hiatus, with up to 10,000 fans allowed to enter Dushanbe’s Central Republican Stadium.

Not since November 2019 has a ball been kicked in the section, but Tajikistan’s tally of seven points from five matches means Usmon Toshev’s side will have no time to ease back into competitive action.

They will likely need to win all three of their remaining matches if they are to stand a realistic chance of extending their bid to reach Qatar 2022, and with matches still to come against group leaders Japan as well as Myanmar, Thursday’s clash is one that the Central Asian side must win.

Mongolia’s position in the group is even more perilous.

An opening win against Myanmar in Ulaanbaatar made the Blue Wolves surprise group leaders back in September 2019, but the four successive defeats that followed mean even a draw in Dushanbe could confirm their elimination from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 race, although the road to the AFC Asian Cup China 2023 will remain open for both nations.

Tajikistan have a number of reasons to feel confident about securing a third win in six Group F matches.

They are one of the better-prepared national teams anywhere in Asia having appeared in five ‘A’ internationals since last September, and have been able to call on a number of the stars of their successful youth national teams, who have quietly continued their development in the absence of meaningful international football.

Among them, 20-year-old forward Shahrom Samiev (pictured below, No 12) has scored four goals in two matches for Moldovan side Dinamo-Auto Tiraspol, while 16-year-old midfield talent Alijoni Aini may be in line for an early international debut after his call-up.

But, while his charges will enter the contest as warm favourites on home soil, Tajikistan boss Toshev insists nothing will be taken for granted.

“For me, there is no such thing as an outsider,” said the former Uzbekistan international. “You must prepare seriously for any game.

  1. This will be the first head to head encounter between the two sides.

Third-placed Tajikistan currently sit five points below Group F leaders Japan and level on points with second-placed Kyrgyzstan. Mongolia meanwhile, sit bottom of Group F on three points but have the opportunity to leapfrog their opponents here with victory in Dushanbe. This should lead to an exciting encounter, with a draw not an ideal result for either side and neither boasting the strongest defence, with Tajikistan conceding eight goals in their five group games so far and Mongolia ten goals. With that in mind, consider over 2.5 goals scored over the course of 90 minutes, regardless of who ultimately comes out on top.
