Sri Lanka vs West Indies Preview:
The first Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka maintained the element of surprise that Tests in recent times have boasted of, after going into the final day and into the final hour. While there have been thrilling results, the drawn result between the two was hardly a tame one, contrary to what it may suggest.
The game had all the undulations of a good Test match – drama, resolve, and it also unearthed a new star. While different personnel stood up for both teams across the five days, it came down to the final 45 minutes on the final day before the teams shook hands.
Jason Holder and Kemar Roach were exemplary with the new ball as Sri Lanka fell apart. With collapses being a regular feature of their batting, they would’ve been pleased with the fightback from Lahiru Thirimanne in the first innings and debutant Pathum Nissanka along with Niroshan Dickwella in the second. It augurs well for the team’s confidence that the batting line-up managed a quick turnaround after the first innings struggles.
Similarly with the ball for the visitors, Suranga Lakmal bowled out of his skin in a lion-hearted effort across both innings returning a five-wicket haul in the first, but in the second, on a flat wicket, Sri Lanka’s bowlers had nothing left in their tank to churn up.
Nkrumah Bonner’s resolve was unshakable as he went on a blockathon and ensured that West Indies too had similar confidence to show for, putting on an improved show as the wicket eased.
But both teams have their own areas of concerns, having shown their vulnerabilities as well, but with the series still perched at 0-0, the final Test will have a lot riding on it, with Sri Lanka eyeing a maiden series win in the Caribbean.
Pitch report & Weather report:
