Morocco have found it fairly comfortable in qualifying so far and have dropped just two points on their way to topping Group E. Mauritania are the only side to take points from them having played out a goalless draw in their opening clash but they are without a win in their last two to leave their spot in second place looking precarious. Morocco arrive for this test in fine form having avoided defeat in their last 13 matches and they should be able to overpower the hosts in this one.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations was Mauritania’s first ever time in the competition, after 45 years of their affiliation with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and now they are looking to make it two appearances in a row. The Lions of Chinguetti are currently second in Group E but are just one point ahead of Burundi and go into this game knowing any slip ups will be punished. Mauritania haven’t been the most exciting team to watch in AFCON qualifying, scoring just four goals and conceding four, but that has put them in good stead, with one win and two draws from their opening four games (losing to Burundi late last year).

For Morocco things are very straightforward, and it is hard to conceive them not being at the Africa Cup of Nations next year. Vahid Halilhodzic’s side are unbeaten in their four group games so far, winning three and drawing one. They have scored nine goals and conceded just one, and are unbeaten in normal time in competitive football since the 2018 World Cup (getting knocked out of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations by Benin on penalties). With just a point needed in their next two games, it won’t be long before Morocco can start planning to try and win their second Africa Cup of Nations, previously tasting glory in 1976.

Munir was born and raised in Spain but eligible to represent Morocco through his father, something that he revealed in 2014 was not in consideration. However, by 2017 that had changed and Munir and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation reportedly contacted FIFA about a switch in allegiance. Those reports were denied and a FIFA spokesman said Munir was ineligible for a switch, due to the fact he had played in a competitive fixture.
