France vs Germany Preview:
The last two World Cup champions will meet already in this mouth watering group stage clash and the world of football will be watching.
This is a fixture normally reserved for the latter stages of competitions and should be a fantastic occasion as both teams will try to get off to the best start possible.
France have dominated the international scene lately and they were runners-up in the last European Championships and won the World Cup in Russia in 2018. France had no problems to qualify for this tournament as they topped their group getting 25 points from a possible 30.
Germany won their qualifying group beating out the Netherlands to finish 1st. From their 8 games played they only lost once and were able to earn 21 points from a possible 24. This will be coach Joachim Low’s last tournament with Germany after being in charge of the nation for the past 15 years so emotions will be running high.
France vs Germany: Head-to-head
- The last time the two nations met was in 2018 in the UEFA Nations League where France won 2-1.
- It’s been six games and seven years since Germany beat France going back to the 2014 World Cup.
- In the 31 games played between the nations only 1 match has finished 0-0 this happened in 2005.
- The teams have only met once before at the European Championship which was in 2016 and France won 2-0.
The buzz around the national side is about the return of Karim Benzema a player who coach Didier Deschamps had dropped for years after they fell out. Benzema is back but he has a slight knock and could miss this game. Antoine Griezmann has a calf injury but is expected to be fine for the rest of the tournament but could miss out here, despite that he will face a late test.
Mats Hummels and Thomas Muller have recovered from slight injuries and Germany have a full squad to pick from. It is possible that Low will opt to switch Joshua Kimmich normally a midfielder to cover in defence as he has hinted at this. Timo Werner’s form hasn’t been good this season and he may miss out to Muller.

On paper France has the best team at the Euro’s and they are favourites to win the Euro’s. The only problem for France might be complacency in the fact that it is hard to win back to back titles. This will be a very difficult game for France and we need to remember that Germany will be playing at home.
Germany have a very good squad but might be a little light up front but they will defend well and make coming forward difficult for France. This is a game that seems to have draw written all over it and we should remember that all 3 teams in this group- France, Germany and Portugal can all qualify for the knock out stages as there is a 70% chance of this with the current format.
This will be a game of chess and we expect to see a slow start as the game gathers more pace in the 2nd half, this has all the markings of being a very good technical game of football.
Probable Playing XI:
Llrois – Pavard, Varane, Kimpembe, Hernandez – Pogba, Kante, Rabiot, Tolisso – Griezmann, Mbappe
Neuer – Ginter, Hummels, Rudiger, Kimmich – Kroos, Gundogan, Gosens, Havertz – Gnabry, Muller
