Peru lost four on the spin in this qualifying campaign, conceding at least two goals in each of five matches since the beginning of the competition.
The latest of the Peruvian failures came five days ago when they conceded three unanswered goals in a tough home loss to Colombia. A comprehensive home win thus has to be the way to go here.
Ecuador will have a nice opportunity to get back on winning track on Tuesday evening when they play host to Peru in their sixth game of the South American World Cup Qualifications.
Ecuador snapped a three-win run with an expected 2-0 defeat to Brazil on Friday evening. The team led by Gustavo Alfaro produced a solid resistance on the occasion, though.
They had a chance to grab a point all up until the stoppage-time when Neymar doubled the Brazilian lead by converting a repeated spot-kick.
The Ecuadorians can still be more than satisfied with the record of three wins and two defeats in the opening five World Cup qualifiers, especially knowing that the losses came against the likes of Argentina (1-0 in the opening round) and Brazil (2-0 four days ago).
Despite failing to find the net in two losses, Ecuador boast the second-best attacking record in the competition.
The team bagged 13 goals in the remaining three outings, including as many as six in the thumping of Colombia in the previous home fixture (6-1).
The story is completely opposite with Peru who have not been pulling up any trees at the beginning of this qualifying term. The Peruvians have thus practically already given up the battle for the top-five finish and a place in Qatar in 2022.
